Mindful vs. Structured Eating....which way out

There are two schools of thought when it comes to tackling or managing Binge Eating and Binge Eating Disorder, and they are both quite different. Mindful or Intuitive eating is on one side, which refers to eating what your body, not mind, wants until it's satisifed, but not over-stuffed, in a calm and mindful matter. Structured eating on the other side typically refers to eating three meals and two snacks per day and following a somewhat regemented eating schedule.

It is challenging when you struggle with 'disordered eating' of any kind because our wiring tends to have us think that everything is either black or white, all or nothing. We either succeed or we fail and there is nothing in between. If we eat two cookies then we might as well have the entire bag because we've blown it anyway. If we can't follow one or the other of these two models, or haven't been introduced to either of them and are continuing to try to diet, than it reaffirms our failing and promotes hopelessnes.

My firm belief is that everyone must find a path that works for themself, and I can help you do this. I have, through trial and error, come to a place whereby I actually combine both of these models, and have found my own way out. I can tell you truthfully that it's been months since I've had a binge. This does not mean that I have found a magic pill that takes away all my troubles, struggles with food obsession etc., but that I've found a way to manage my own eating that supports a healthier me both mentally and physically. I promise you that if there is a way out for me than there is a way out for you too!

The key, I believe, in managing binge eating is being able to be focused on staying present in today, living in our bodies and not our heads, and understanding that one wrong move does not a failure make. We can hit the 'reset' button every day or as many times a day as we need to. The only time that we can make choices that affect change in our lives is right here and right now in this very moment, and that's a powerful thing to learn and apply. If we do nothing, but get on a diet or eating plan and focus on the number that we want to reach, then we set ourselves up to fail. I, for one, have done enough research on this for myself to know it to be true. So trying it yet again, and just doing better this time, isn't the answer and never will be.

Imagine that by letting go of the outcome, that number on the scale that you believe when reached will have all your problems solved and your life will be like living in a beer commercial, and focusing on making positive steps daily that you can change your life dramatically over time then there is light at the end of the tunnel. Again, I promise.
